De beste songs van 2011: veel Amerikanen en vrouwen

Uit een shortlist van 200 songs hebben we er 50 gekozen die volgens ons dat ietsje meer hebben. Dat het klassiekers worden is nog maar de vraag: de factor zeitgeist wegdenken bij het maken van zo'n selectie is ondoenbaar. En ook niet echt relevant, want uiteindelijk zoeken we naar wat we nu het leukst vinden.

Daarmee gezegd zijnde: wat u de volgende week krijgt zijn niet de lijstjes van de best verkopende of meest op de radio gedraaide platen. Het zijn persoonlijke inschattingen van redacteurs. Bij het samenstellen van deze lijst vielen alvast een aantal zaken op:

1) Nog nooit hadden we zo'n groot percentage vrouwen in onze lijst. 52 van de 200 songs op onze shortlist zijn toe te schrijven aan één vrouw. Achter 101 songs schreven we "band", en dat betekent dat voor het eerst de mannen het onderspit delven.

2) En hoewel er ook best wat Europese vrouwelijke acts in onze shortlist staan, komt het toenemende gewicht dat vrouwelijke singer-songwriters in de schaal gooien toch vooral uit Amerika. En Scandinavië, niet voor niets 's werelds meest gendergelijk werelddeel zo blijk ook uit deze lijst. Van de 15 Scandinavische nummers zijn er 14 door vrouwen geschreven en vertolkt.

3) Scandinavië (met name Zweden, IJsland en een heel klein beetje Denemarken) staat daarmee derde, na de VS en de UK, maar voor Canada, dat 13 liedjes in de shortlist heeft. 62 nummers komen uit de UK, 98 uit de VS. Wat rest, zijn peanuts voor een handvol landen, met name Australië, Barbados (Rihanna weetuwel), Frankrijk. Rusland, Korea en Nieuw-Zeeland staan ook in onze lijst met één nummer.
