Luchtvaartmaatschappij Air Canada heeft voor de eerste keer een testvlucht uitgevoerd waarbij de tank voor de helft vol biobrandstoffen, waaronder keukenolie, zat. Het vliegtuig vertrok vanuit Toronto naar -hoe kan het ook anders- Mexico City, waar de klimaatconferentie Rio +20 plaatsvindt.
Voor het vliegtuig opsteeg, stond de volgende boodschap op de website van de maatschappij: "Flight AC991 from Toronto to Mexico City is expected to generate at least 40 per cent fewer emissions by using jet fuel derived from recycled cooking oil and through other fuel-saving measures, making it the most environmentally-friendly flight ever flown by Air Canada. The flight is supported by Airbus and is part of an environmental demonstration by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to coincide with the Rio +20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development."
Volgens Air Canada gebruikt de maatschappij sinds 1990 al dertig procent minder brandstof, niet door minder vluchten te plannen maar door zuiniger te vliegen.
